The Essence of Formal Tea Ceremonies
Since ancient times, incense burning has been an essential part of formal tea ceremonies. The most expensive ingredient in the world, agarwood, is normally used for this purpose. For the last 1400 years, it has been priced more than gold, and reserved for imperial families only. This exquisite turtle incense box is handcrafted by Shimizu Yasutaka. The harmony expressed through its shape and texture, as well as the colour of the refined glazing and the use of rough chamotte demonstrates Shimizu Yasutaka’s deep understanding of the essence of Japanese ceramic art.
